Imagine criticizing a politician online, posting something they find insulting, and suddenly you’re not dealing with angry comments or a suspended account—you could be dealing with the criminal justice system. That isn’t some hypothetical proposal buried in a think tank report. Germany’s Criminal Code already contains Section 188, specifically addressing insults, malicious gossip and defamation aimed at people in political life, with qualifying public insults carrying up to three years behind bars. And before Americans shrug this off as something happening “over there,” there’s a much bigger question we need to ask: Are pieces of a similar speech-control infrastructure being assembled here at home? What I uncovered about where this could be heading—and what is already being put into place—is something every American who values the right to criticize those in power needs to see. Watch this report, because this story is much bigger than one German law.
