The World Economic Forum has just declared 2026 the “Year of Water,” putting water scarcity, water infrastructure, private investment, and new financing models front and center on the global agenda. At the very same time, AI is exploding across the planet, with massive new data centers requiring enormous amounts of water to operate. And suddenly, everybody is talking about a water crisis. But here’s where I think we need to be extremely careful.
Because whenever powerful governments, corporations, billionaires, and unelected global organizations tell us that a crisis is brewing, we should start asking some very important questions: Who gets the power? Who gets the money? Who controls the infrastructure? And perhaps most importantly—who controls the water when all of this is finished?
Because water isn’t something you can opt out of. You can turn down your thermostat. You can shut off your computer and walk away from technology. But nobody can opt out of water. And that is what makes what is happening right now so important.
Because the future battle over water may not begin with armies fighting over reservoirs. It will begin with permits, emergency declarations, tiered pricing, groundwater restrictions, mandatory conservation, and monitoring…
They’ll tell us it’s about climate change. They’ll tell us it’s about drought. They’ll tell us it’s about AI. But the question I want to investigate today is much bigger: Are they really preparing to solve a water crisis—or are they using the crisis to build the infrastructure to control the water?
